We are a group of five Interactive Multimedia & Design students in our fourth year at Carleton University. Our final project is a teaser trailer for a live-action visual effects science fiction movie, called Retrograde. It's a short film edited in the format of a trailer, using real locations and actors. The goal is to create a professional teaser using the theoretical movie plot. The logline of the theoretical movie is that an android crash-lands on Earth and decides to save humanity from an invasion led by the emperor of her home planet. Our trailer starts with the main character, Amalthea, inside her escape pod, trying to control her ship. She crashes into a field on Earth and is then discovered by a teenage boy named Ren. He decides to help Amalthea and together they shoot down agents, run from explosions, and confront the evil emperor. To make a high-quality film with this storyline and the standards of filmmaking taught in the Interactive Multimedia & Design program, we used special locations and sets along with many measures taken for proper visual effects creation. There are three main phases in making a short film; pre-production, production, and post-production. Pre-production includes the creation of a screenplay, storyboards, an animatic, prototype user testing, locations booking, casting, costume acquisition, props acquisition, and shot testing on-location. Production includes filming professional actors using industry-standard equipment such as Blackmagic cameras, the Freefly gimbal, and lighting equipment, among other specialty filming equipment. We filmed on locations such as Wesley Clover Parks, the Diefenbunker, and Escape Manor Junior, with our talented actors Brenda Ngo, Jason Sedlar, and Nezar El-Rayes. The post-production phase includes film editing, sound editing, visual effects creation, and more user testing. We are currently in the post-production phase, and are excited to show you the finished product in April 2021!
